Early on this season, the South Carolina men's basketball team has turned in some very promising performances and some equally concerning ones.
But Monday night in Huntington, West Virginia, the best version of this young Gamecock team was on display in a 77-59 win over Marshall (3-4).
South Carolina (4-3) looked to be in control from the start in this nonconference road trip. Less than five minutes into the contest, the Gamecocks had already established a 10-point lead over the Thundering Herd.
South Carolina would expand its lead to as large at 23 points just before the end of the half.
Entering Monday's game, sophomore guard Sindarius Thornwell was the only Gamecock averaging double digits scoring, but it was fellow sophomore Duane Notice that put on a clinic against the Herd.
The guard led South Carolina in both assists and points with four and a whopping 27, respectively. He also finished in a tie for the second-most rebounds on the team with five on the day.
Thornwell just cracked the double-digit threshold with 10 points, but his biggest contribution came on the boards, where he led the Gamecocks with 10 rebounds.
Junior Laimonas Chatkevicius and sophomore Justin McKie were the other South Carolina players to reach double figures, turning in 15 and 12, respectively.
The Gamecocks were able to keep Marshall front-man Ryan Taylor in check. The forward entered the game leading the Herd with 16.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game, but he was limited to 11 and three Monday night.
South Carolina's next action will be arguably its biggest test of the season thus far, as the Gamecocks host Oklahoma State Saturday.
