South Carolina falls to Winthrop in extra innings

South Carolina (17-4) closed out its 12-game homestand with its first loss in over two weeks, falling to Winthrop (7-5) in extra innings Tuesday night.

With the score evened at 3-3, Winthrop took the lead after a four-run 11th inning and the Gamecocks couldn’t overcome the deficit.

Senior pitcher Cody Mincey took the loss for South Carolina, giving up four runs in only 0.2 innings of work.

Winthrop sophomore left fielder Babe Thomas put the Eagles up 5-3 with a two-run double in the 11th and a single by junior catcher Roger Gonzalez sent in two more runs, as well.

The Gamecocks battled back in the bottom of the 11th and after a single by junior first baseman Collin Steagall, South Carolina trailed by just two runs.

But an infield pop-out by junior second baseman Marcus Mooney ended the game.

Junior pitcher Joey Strain earned the win for Winthrop.

Moving forward, South Carolina will attempt to continue its good start to SEC play when traveling to face Missouri this weekend.
