USCPD issues new crime bulletin for students

USCPD released a new crime bulletin for students Thursday afternoon regarding a phone scam targeting college students. According to the release, the scam involves students receiving phone calls from persons claiming to be from the police or IRS who say that the student must immediately send money or a warrant will be issued for their arrest.

The release goes on to indicate that the suspect will sometimes claim that the money is due for a delinquent parking ticket. The suspect is described by the crime bulletin as “male or female” and sometimes speaking in a “foreign accent.”

Safety tips included in the bulletin note that all incidents of fraud should be reported to USCPD, that direct contact with the IRS should always be made if one has questions regarding their taxes, and that the IRS will never begin contact via electronic communication regarding personal data.
