Gamecock men’s tennis loses battle on courts against Texas A&M

Texas A&M snapped South Carolina’s two-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory at the Carolina Tennis Center Friday afternoon.

The No. 7 Aggies didn’t hesitate to secure the doubles point against the No. 18 Gamecocks at the beginning of match play.

No. 63 doubles pair Paul Jubb and Raphael Lambling fell to No. 23 doubles pair Juan Carlos Aguilar and Barnaby Smith 2-6.

Texas A&M entered singles play with a 1-0 advantage over the Gamecocks.

The Aggies No. 76 singles player Barnaby Smith won the first singles victory for the Aggies by defeating Joe Brailovsky 6-1, 6-1.

South Carolina didn't get any points on the board as Texas A&M won two additional singles matches to lead with an overall score of 4-0.

The Gamecocks eventually got a point as No. 5 ranked Paul Jubb defeated No. 77 ranked Juan Carlos Aguilar 6-3, 7-5.

However, the Aggies automatically won the match by decision since they had already won four matches.

“At spots we were good, at other spots we weren’t very good,” head coach Josh Goffi said. “That’s what costed us the match, or at least didn’t put us in position to win the match today.”

Goffi said that he believes the Gamecocks will earn more victories in the upcoming matches if players remain consistent.

“We’re 100 percent about bringing a certain level of consistency to what we do. We have a lot of young players and that’s our number one goal,” Goffi said. “Today, we didn’t do that, and I think A&M did. So as far as moving forward, that’s gonna be our goal.”

The Gamecocks will be hosting their last home match against No. 32 LSU at 1 p.m. on Sunday, if weather permits.
