South Carolina women's tennis defeats Auburn in first senior weekend match

The No. 3 South Carolina women's tennis team defeated the No. 49 Auburn Tigers 4-0 on Thursday night to kick off senior weekend. Seniors Ingrid Gamarra Martins, Paige Cline and Rachel Rohrabacher were honored before the match began.

Going into Thursday's match, the Gamecocks had a 14-3 overall record and were 9-1 in SEC conference play. They previously won four straight matches over No. 5 Vanderbilt, No. 23 Kentucky, No. 12 Texas A&M and No. 23 LSU. 

The Auburn Tigers were 13-11 overall and 0-9 in the SEC.

Head Coach Kevin Epley switched up the doubles teams prior to the match, separating Rohrabacher and Cline, the No. 29 ranked doubles pair. 

To start doubles play, Paige Cline and Rachel Rohrabacher jumped ahead and defeated Jaeda Daniel and Yu Chen 6-2 on court two.

Megan Davies and Kennedy Wicker finished up their match and came out on top with a 6-3 win, clinching the doubles point for the Gamecocks. 

No. 2-ranked Gamarra Martins and Mia Horvit took a fast 2-0 lead before Tigers duo Madeline Meredith and Taylor Russo came back and took the lead away. The match was unfinished with a score of 5-4.

Singles play began with leads by five out of six Gamecocks. 

Rachel Rohrabacher started off slow, giving up four games to Caroline Turner before coming back to win her first set 6-4. No. 96 Mia Horvit struggled on court three, but managed to win her first set 7-5.

No. 5 Ingrid Gamarra Martins played a steady match that resulted in a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jaeda Daniel, while Kennedy Wicker defeated Lindsay Song 6-0, 6-2 on court six.

No. 27 Paige Cline stunned the crowd on court two as she won her first set 6-1 and her second set 6-0. She defeated Taylor Russo in less than one hour. 

The Gamecocks will host Alabama at the Carolina Tennis Center on Sunday at 1 p.m.
