The Richland County Coroner’s Office has identified Breckin Muzzy as the student who died in Honors Residence Hall on Sunday. The coroner’s office is awaiting test results to determine Muzzy’s cause of death.

Muzzy was a first-year chemistry student from North Charleston, South Carolina, according to university spokesperson Jeff Stensland. Muzzy was 18.

“Shelly and I are deeply saddened about the loss of Breckin Muzzy and we send our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones,” President Bob Caslen said in a Monday statement.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Richland County Coroner’s Office are leading the investigation into Muzzy’s death.

A Carolina Alert was sent to students Sunday morning saying a death was “under investigation at Honors Residence Hall” and that “no foul play” was suspected.

Stensland encouraged students struggling with grief to use the university’s counseling resources.
