For Gamecocks A'ja Wilson celebrates during the fourth quarter of South Carolina's 64-49 victory over UConn during the 2022 national championship on April 3, 2022.

Las Vegas Aces forward and former Gamecock women’s basketball star, A’ja Wilson, won her second WNBA MVP award, the league announced Wednesday.

Wilson received 31 first-place votes and 478 total points. Runner-up, Seattle Storm forward Breanna Stewart, earned 23 first-place votes and 446 overall.

Wilson claims her second award of the 2022 season after being named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year on Aug. 30. The league announces the 2022 All-WNBA teams Thursday, Sept. 15, likely adding a second career first-team selection to Wilson’s resume.

Wilson helped lead the Aces to a league-best 26-10 record this season. She played in every game, averaging 20 points, nine rebounds and two blocks on 50% shooting. Wilson led the WNBA in total rebounds, blocks and field goals made, while finishing third in total points.

The Aces punched its ticket to the WNBA finals Tuesday after defeating the Storm in the WNBA semifinals series 3-1. Wilson will get her second shot at winning her first professional championship against the winner of the other semifinal series, which will be decided Thursday when the defending champion Chicago Sky host the Connecticut Sun at 8 p.m.

This is a developing story.
