Sir Big Spur traveled to Athens, Georgia, for South Carolina's game against Georgia on Sept. 18, 2021. USC's live mascot will keep its original name after weeks of talk about changing it.

South Carolina's live mascot will once again go by Sir Big Spur, the university announced three days after renaming the rooster The General

USC's administration and the bird's families reconnected and found a solution after receiving feedback about naming the mascot after Thomas Sumter, a Revolutionary War general, according to a news release.

The name Sir Big Spur reflects feedback and respects the wishes of both families, the university said.

The Post and Courier first reported in August that bird's former owners, who have naming rights to Sir Big Spur, wanted its new owners to cut the bird's comb, causing the initial decision to change the name.

"It was always preferred that we would stay with the ‘Sir Big Spur’ name,” Deputy Athletics Director Eric Nichols said in a news release.  “I appreciate the passion that the owners, Mary Snelling and Ron Albertelli, and the new handlers Beth and Van Clark, have for the Gamecocks and the live mascot.  We are pleased that we are starting the season with the same name as in year’s past.”
