Gamecocks fall in extra innings in Monte Lee's first game as interim head coach

Arkansas edged out South Carolina in a 3-2 win in extra innings to secure the series in Monte Lee’s first game as head coach after Paul Mainieri parted ways with South Carolina on Saturday morning.

"It was a really tough day, considering how it started," Lee said. "I feel so bad for Coach Mainieri in how it ended."

Junior right-handed pitcher Amp Phillips started on the mound for the Gamecocks, while sophomore left-handed pitcher Hunter Dietz started the game for Arkansas.

Ruiz hit a solo homerun over the centerfield wall in the third inning for Arkansas to take the early 1-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Junior outfielder Tyler Bak took away a would-be home run from Nui on a leaping grab in centerfield to keep the score at 1-0 after Ruiz hit a solo homerun over the centerfield wall in the third inning for Arkansas to take the early lead.

In the fifth inning, Yuhasz took a walk, senior outfielder Ethan Lizama bunted him over and sophomore infielder Beau Hollins cashed the run in with single up the middle to tie the game at one apiece in the fifth inning.

Phillips had one of his best outings so far this season on Saturday, pitching seven innings, giving up three hits, a run and striking out six batters against an elite Razorback lineup.

"Couldn't have asked for more from Amp Phillips" Lee said, "He gave us everything he possibly could have given us today."

With two outs in the seventh inning, Hollins hit a double down the third base line, which drove Dietz out of the game. The next batter, Bak, came through with a go-ahead RBI single off the left field wall to drive in Hollins and take the lead 2-1.

Junior left-handed pitcher, Alex Valentin replaced Phillips in the eighth inning, where he struck out two batters and secured the 2-1 lead going into the ninth inning.

Valentin came back out in the ninth inning in a save situation. Valentin found himself in a jam with two outs and a man on third, and a devastating error from Scobey allowed the Razorbacks to tie it and send the game into extra innings.

In the tenth inning, Pompey doubled to start the inning, and a bunt-single from junior infielder Nolan Souza put runners on the corners with no outs. Kozeal knocked a run in with an RBI groundout to take the lead in extra innings.

Arkansas had a clean inning in the bottom of the tenth inning, securing a 3-2 comeback win for the Razorbacks and winning the weekend series.
