The Southeastern Conference is the most dominant conference in Division I baseball, with the last six College World Series titles being won by one of the programs. In the 2025 Major League Baseball draft, all 30 professional teams selected at least one player from the SEC, and all 16 conference programs had at least one player drafted.

The talent and competition in the conference are top tier and wins never come guaranteed, especially in the sport of baseball. Last season, South Carolina went 6-24 in conference play, earning only one series win against Ole Miss and was swept five times.

Now entering his second year as the Gamecocks' head coach, Paul Mainieri is looking to turn the tide following one of the worst seasons in recent history. With less than two weeks to go before conference play, here are the rundowns for some of South Carolina's most important SEC matchups.

Top series in March

The Gamecocks open the conference schedule away at Florida on March 13. Last season, the Gators finished 39-22 (15-15) and made a NCAA Tournament appearance in the Conway Regional.

South Carolina will then host Arkansas for the first home conference series of the season starting on March 20.

Arkansas is coming off of a successful season under head coach Dave Van Horn, which last season saw the Razorbacks suffer a devastating walk-off loss in the College World Series semifinals against LSU. The program returns some top players who will look to make another postseason run in juniors Kuhio Aloy and Camden Kozeal.

The Razorbacks return junior righty Gabe Gaeckle as their Friday starter, with junior Colin Fisher and sophomore Cole Gibler rounding out the Razorbacks' top pitchers in 2026 as well.

"We play some of the teams that haven't done as well," Van Horn said. "Even though they might not be in that every year powerhouse ... It's the SEC. It's a lot more level playing field."

Important April matchups

Voted runner-up in the SEC Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll, Texas will meet South Carolina for the first time as members of the same conference since the Longhorns joined the SEC last season.

Last season, Texas hosted the Austin Regional and finished 44-14 (22-8) in 2025. The Longhorns are led offensively by junior transfer outfielder Aiden Robbins, junior infielder Ethan Mendoza and freshman outfielder Anthony Pack Jr.

After a weekend series against Missouri, who are the only team that was picked to finish worse than South Carolina in the conference, the Gamecocks return home to host Mississippi State at Founders Park.

Mississippi State finished third in the preseason poll and was yet another SEC team that made the postseason at the Tallahassee Regional in 2025 and finished 36-23 (15-15)

One of MLB’s top prospects for the 2026 draft returns to Starkville, Mississippi, in junior infielder Ace Reece. Ranked No. 18 on the list, Reece had a stellar sophomore season with 21 home runs, 64 RBI and a .347 batting average. Three sophomores lead the pitching staff for Mississippi State in Tomas Valincius, Ryan McPherson and Duke Stone.

South Carolina will then turn around and conclude its seven game homestand against Kentucky at the end of April.

After a solid 2025 campaign ended in an NCAA regional finals loss against West Virginia in the Clemson Regional, Kentucky will look to continue the momentum they’ve had for the past few years under head coach Nick Mingione.

Last season, the Wildcats finished 31-26 (13-17) and have key players in sophomore shortstop Tyler Bell, senior infielder Luke Lawrence and redshirt sophomore Hudson Brown

May finale for the Gamecocks

The reigning College World Series champions return yet another dominant lineup in 2026. Head coach Jay Johnson’s squad returns draft-eligible sophomore outfielder Derek Curiel, who was a 2025 Freshman All-SEC selection and is ranked No. 6 on the 2026 MLB draft prospects list.

Junior outfielder Jake Brown, junior infielder Steven Milam and senior infielder Zach Yorke round out some of the Tigers' top bats. Sophomore Casan Evans, junior Cooper Moore and sophomore William Schmidt have been the Tigers' starting rotation.

This will be Mainieri's first time back to Alex Box Stadium since he retired with the Tigers after the 2021 season before returning to coaching in 2025. Mainieri was the head coach for the Tigers from 2007-2021 and coached LSU to its sixth College World Series win in 2009.

"I think the depth of the team on both sides looks like it's a strength," Johnson said. "It's like when you get through the SEC, if you make it to the NCAA Tournament, you kind of feel this peace like there's nothing that you haven't seen before."

After a matchup against Alabama, South Carolina rounds out the regular season against the Commodores, who went 43-18 (19-11) and hosted the Nashville Regional in 2025 under head coach Tim Corbin.

For the Commodores, junior utility player Braden Holcomb and sophomore infielder Brodie Johnston lead the team offensively. Pitchers junior Connor Fennell and sophomore Nate Taylor have been two consistent weekend starters as well.
