FILE — The Gamecocks meet on the pitcher’s mound with head coach Paul Mainieri to strategize for the next innings against Charlotte at Founders Park on March 17, 2026. Associate head coach and hitting coach Monte Lee has taken over as interim head coach after South Carolina parted ways with Mainieri in the 2026 season.

The past few days have been nothing short of a roller coaster for the South Carolina baseball program. Before the weekend series against No. 4 Arkansas even began, the team was already struggling with Paul Mainieri at the helm.

The Gamecocks were in the midst of a five-game skid, including midweek losses to The Citadel on March 10 and Charlotte on March 17, along with a series sweep against then-ranked No. 23 Florida.

The growing disappointments of the season were becoming more and more apparent, but the Southeastern Conference home opener against the Razorbacks proved to be the tipping point for the program. South Carolina suffered a 22-6 loss in seven innings of play against the Razorbacks.

Just a day later, on March 21, it was announced that Mainieri would be parting ways with the university, effective immediately. Mainieri recorded a 40-40 record during his two-season tenure at South Carolina, including a 6-28 record in SEC play.

“I want to make it clear that Ray Tanner, Jeremiah Donati, President Amiridis, and the university leadership have supported me and the baseball program throughout my tenure,” Mainieri said. “In short, I did not get the job done at a level that I expected, or the university deserves.

New coaching change for the rest of the season

With Mainieri out, associate head coach/hitting coach Monte Lee was named the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2026 season. Lee was the head coach at the College of Charleston from 2009-15 as well as the head coach at Clemson from 2016-22

Lee will be using his opportunity as interim head coach to state his case for the official title. There has already been a noticeable difference in the energy of the team during games under Lee.

South Carolina hit four home runs in its 9-4 win over Arkansas on March 22, and the celebrations from the dugout after each bomb brought energy that had not been seen for a while.

“We need to celebrate a little bit more,” Lee said. “Like again, we need to celebrate success and have a little bit of fun. I just think these kids need that. The more we can do that, I really believe the better baseball we'll play.”

Lee's promotion to head coach wasn't the only coaching change South Carolina baseball made in the past week.

It was announced Monday that Chris Gordon would become an on-field assistant coach after his role as director of operations and player development. Former South Carolina assistant coach Stuart Lake was named the new director of program development.

Looking ahead at potential new candidates

With the departure of Mainieri, the athletic department will begin its search for a new head coach. After the news broke about the coaching change, names have already been brought up as potential hires to look at over the next few months.

Kevin Schnall is a top name that has been thrown around since the announcement of Mainieri's departure. In his first season as head coach at Coastal Carolina in 2025, Schnall led the Chanticleers to a 56-13 (26-4 Sun Belt Conference) record and a Men's College World Series appearance.

Current TCU head coach Kirk Saarloos has been brought up due to his relationship with South Carolina athletics director Jeremiah Donati. Saarloos, who was hired by Donati when he was athletic director at TCU, has also been a pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the Horned Frogs and has led TCU to three NCAA Tournament appearances and a trip to Omaha, Nebraska, in 2023.

Skylar Meade was the South Carolina pitching coach from 2018-22 and is now the head coach at Troy. In the past three seasons under Meade, the program has seen 37-plus wins while playing in the Sun Belt Conference

To round out some potential candidates, Justin Parker is a name that South Carolina fans are familiar with. Parker is the current pitching coach at Mississippi State and spent two seasons with South Carolina in that same role from 2022-23.

Potential players to target for new leadership

For the next head coach, whoever that may be, one of the most important steps will be to immediately look at the roster that they are taking over and have important discussions with players. With the transfer portal and 2027 MLB draft threatening much of the talent at South Carolina, some of the current players may potentially have those important meetings early on.

Riley Goodman has shown some of the highest velocities so far this season on the mound. Despite some early struggles from the redshirt freshman who missed 2025 with injury, a new coaching staff at South Carolina could help shape Goodman into a league-ready pitcher

Sophomore shortstop KJ Scobey is a draft-eligible sophomore this season for the Gamecocks and could potentially threaten to leave through the draft or portal. Scobey spent the summer with USA Baseball and has shown his abilities on the field and at the plate.

Sophomore first baseman Beau Hollins and freshman infielder Will Craddock are two other names that could be on the move. These new coaching changes this season could be a factor in these two players’ contributions to the team, which could be something to anticipate.

What's next?

The newly led South Carolina Gamecocks will travel to Athens, Georgia, to take on the No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs in their third SEC series of the season. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on March 27, and the game can be streamed on SEC Network+.
