Each year, SEC Media Days bring fans a number of different things to look forward to. The most important part comes at the very end when we see how the assembled media think the SEC will play out in the coming year.

First-year head coach Will Muschamp closed out SEC Media Days with confidence despite ambiguity Thursday. Three players joined Muschamp on the trip to Hoover, Alabama: wide receiver Deebo Samuel, offensive tackle Mason Zandi and defender Marquavius Lewis.

Bringing in defensive guru Will Muschamp as the head guy in Columbia is expected to do wonders for South Carolina's defense as soon as 2016. While the Gamecocks don't have the raw talent that Coach Boom had at Florida, there are plenty of playmakers who can make a positive impact.

While the majority of the offensive focus is generally on the skill positions, battles in the trenches are the foundation for moving the ball down the field. Let's take a look at the potential starting five up front for South Carolina this season.

Offensive weapons were hard to come by for the South Carolina football team in 2015, and there is a cloud of uncertainty at the skill positions yet again this season. No receiver returns for 2016 with more than 12 receptions, while the leading returner in terms of rushing yardage is quarterback Lorenzo Nunez, who is not expected to be used under center much in 2016. There will be plenty of new faces in prominent roles in the Gamecock offense this fall, so let's get to know a little more about some of the players tasked with rejuvenating one of the SEC's worst offenses.

Will Muschamp and the Gamecocks missed out on a big transfer this week, as it was reported Thursday night that former Florida defensive back J.C. Jackson would not be enrolling at South Carolina. Jackson was a member of Muschamp's 2014 recruiting class in Gainesville, and he was strongly considering reuniting with his former coach, but he will not come to Columbia because of "a ruling that's beyond South Carolina's control."

Alabama football players Cam Robinson and Hootie Jones found themselves on the receiving end of good news Monday, when it was announced that neither player would face charges stemming from their May arrests. This decision makes sense because it wasn't a serious crime or anything ... Oh wait, Robinson and Jones were found in a car near a park, police discovered marijuana in that car and Robinson was looking at a felony count of possession of a stolen firearm.

With South Carolina's 2016 baseball season over, Gamecock fans won't see their teams take action in one of the three major sports until September, when the football team will take on the Vanderbilt Commodores. Join me as I break down the potential starting quarterbacks on a six-week series that will preview the key players on Will Muschamp's squad for the upcoming season.

This past April saw three former Gamecock football players get selected in the 2016 NFL Draft. The first Gamecock off the board was wide receiver Pharoh Cooper. He was drafted by the recently relocated Los Angeles Rams with the 19th pick of the fourth round. Later, the New York Jets selected offensive tackle Brandon Shell with the 19th pick of the fifth round. Finally, the New York Giants selected tight end Jerell Adams with the ninth pick of the sixth round.

The world of sports tends to focus on wins, titles and records, as well it should, as athletes work tirelessly to perform at the highest level, searching to climb the figurative mountaintop that is a championship. However, there are times where the narratives our athletes write command a different sort of attention, such as when Jason Collins opened the door for homosexuality in professional sports. On Thursday in Waco, Texas, Baylor University called our attention to one of those occasions.

As June nears, we are rapidly approaching the worst part of the year for sports fans: The seemingly infinite stretch between the conclusion of the NBA Finals and the start of college football. Not content with the MLB regular season that seems to drag on and on, many of us turn to offseason storylines in football to keep us entertained. So for those of you who, like me, want to talk about football — particularly South Carolina football — all day, every day, I have great news for you: 100 days from today, Will Muschamp will lead the new-look Gamecocks onto the field for the first time. That may seem like a long way away, but it's not too far off to start talking football in Columbia.

Redshirt junior quarterback Connor Mitch announced Thursday that he will be leaving the University of South Carolina. He will attend another university next fall in hopes of continuing his football career after he graduates with a degree in psychology from South Carolina in August.

Wednesday, the Philadelphia Eagles joined the Los Angeles Rams and became the second team in the last week to ship out a pile of current and future draft picks in order to move up to the top two picks, presumably to get one of the top quarterbacks in this year's class. California's Jared Goff and North Dakota State's Carson Wentz are considered to be the cream of the crop this year, and neither has emerged as the consensus top choice.

It’s that time of the year. Well, it’s almost that time of the year. Football season gave us a tease of its scandalous ankles Saturday when South Carolina had its annual Garnet and Black spring game.
(04/09/16 7:00pm)
With 32,916 fans in attendance for Will Muschamp and his coach staff’s official debut as Gamecocks, the Black team dominated, defeating the Garnet team 35-14.

Coming into the Garnet and Black Game, there are some obvious questions. Will new head coach Will Muschamp and his coaching staff make an immediate positive impact come September? Who’s going to start at quarterback? Who’s going to be the main weapon on offense? But among these broader questions are more pressing and specific issues that could be addressed during the spring game.

Will Muschamp's program will add yet another talented young quarterback in 2016 to an already robust crop. The highly touted Jake Bentley, ranked the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2017 per ESPN, has announced that he will reclassify as a 2016 recruit and enroll at South Carolina this summer.

Coming into Wednesday's pro day for the South Carolina football team, scouts and fans alike were eagerly anticipating watching wide receiver Pharoh Cooper run through some tests, particularly the 40-yard dash, as the star wideout skipped all running events at the NFL Combine due to a leg injury. Cooper didn't blow anyone away with his speed, but he blended in with an uncharacteristically slow receiver class, running a time of 4.61. Cooper wasn't too concerned about his time, however, as he believes his on-field work should be the main topic of discussion.

Injuries have plagued the South Carolina quarterback competition this spring, bringing early enrollee Brandon McIlwain to the forefront. However, coach Will Muschamp has decided to stray from the conventional path, abolishing the position of quarterback altogether.
(03/30/16 3:09am)
New head coach Will Muschamp has plenty of doubters, and to be honest, he deserves a bit of skepticism. In four years at the helm in Gainesville, Florida, Muschamp underachieved greatly in three of them, including a 4-8 campaign in 2013 that included a loss to Division I-AA's Georgia Southern. Florida had a great deal of NFL-caliber talent, particularly on the defensive end, but Muschamp could never seem to get the right offensive schemes together to be competitive. Even in the team's 11-2 2012 season, where the Gators were humiliated by Louisville in the Sugar Bowl, the offense was relatively stagnant, relying on phenomenal defense to eek out victories.
