The Daily Gamecock strongly stands behind the American system of free elections and the right to express opinions critical of the government. Democracy depends on the legal existence of opposition parties, peaceful transition of power, acceptance of elections and an independent judiciary.

While I have found that the general perception of America’s two major parties is that the Democrats are the party of the people while the GOP is associated with America’s elite, this election cycle has proved the opposite. The fact that Hillary Clinton is the Democratic nominee and likely next president of the U.S. is not primarily the result of popular effort but of the party leadership’s decision that she would be their nominee. Democratic voters never really had the chance to choose someone else.

For many of my friends, Halloweekend was the most anticipated time of the year. The festival of frights on the last day of October is preceded by nightly parties where it is perfectly normal to see a zombie joking and laughing with Harley Quinn while Bob from "Bob’s Burgers" brings everyone drinks. But Halloween is not only about partying or dressing up, it’s also about candy. Specifically, chocolate.

Good morning, America. Election day is nearly upon us. The day many have been fearing, loathing, waiting to come and go, or a combination of the three. Hopefully, regardless of how you feel about the candidates or even the election in general, you go out and vote. Not just because you support — or hate — a particular candidate, vote for your vision of America.

It has been over a year since Donald Trump castigated Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio for speaking Spanish to interviewers, and one bilingual politician remains on the campaign trail: Hillary Clinton’s running mate, Tim Kaine. “Todos somos americanos," we are all Americans, Kaine declared Thursday night in a speech delivered entirely in Spanish: A feat few in his position could achieve, but one that will likely earn him grief. In recent times, being a bilingual politician has become an attack point for critics, but the ability to communicate in another language is a powerful asset for our country’s leaders.

In previous election cycles, much attention was devoted to the increasing partisanship of American politics. It was generally viewed as a bad thing — in fact, when President Obama was running for the first time in 2008, he positioned himself as the one who would be able to transcend partisan gridlock and cooperate with the opposition to get things done. That obviously didn’t happen. Now, we are in the closing stages of a political season marked by the most rabid partisanship in living memory.

The Gamecocks may have beat Tennessee in a surprise victory Saturday night, but we certainly didn’t win when it came to sportsmanship. South Carolina fans were disrespectful when Tennessee players were injured not once, but twice, during the second half of the game.

An upset win and the fanfare around it can easily lock fans into viewing the game in the short term. It can be easily oversimplified as a stroke of luck or a great moment in an otherwise disappointing season. But the Gamecocks' victory over No. 18 Tennessee meant more than that. Here’s why:

For decades, liberals and minority communities have asserted that conservatism is about suppressing minority groups. And for decades, conservatives have responded with “It’s not about hate, it’s about ___________.” The blank could be filled in with law and order, upholding the sanctity of marriage, keeping women safe or various other things.

On Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, a young boy named Jake, who lives in a small village in Ghana, became a worldwide sensation as Instagram photos surfaced of the boy completely entranced in a lesson. Taken by Carlos Cortes, this photo far surpassed any expectations of receiving many “likes” on the social media site. Rather, it has given the boy the chance to receive an education thanks to donations from people around the world. Without Instagram, Jake and his peers might not have had the chance to attain an education.

Every so often in the news, there is a story on parental abuse. Often these stories include a child or children being confined to a basement or a single room. We have all heard these types of horrific accounts, and most of us share a similar response of shock and outrage. We imagine the type of psychological damage done to these children and shudder at the thought of ever having to experience such a miserable way of existence ourselves. However, what we don’t realize is that we are participating in something very similar to such stories when we go to the zoo.

In a world of wild and interesting sexualities, gender identities and romantic predilections, stuffy conservative traditionalists can find a lot to hate. Whether it's people participating in workplace discrimination for newly married same-sex couples, people still calling Caitlyn Jenner by her dead name or religious sects pushing the heteronormative monogamist’s agenda, there are so many people out there who hate queerness. In this ever-growing world of discovery and hatefulness, the term “homophobia” no longer covers it all. American conservatives hate way more demographics than just gay people. So for those of you who hate all things LGBTQIA*, the word for you is queerphobic. Put that on your résumé.

Despite our culture’s abolition of most taboos about sex, one area that doesn’t get a lot of press is pornography. This lack of press is incongruent with the historical trend of porn becoming ever more accessible — yes, pornography is a historical trend that predates Hugh Hefner and Playboy. From the printing press to magazines and finally the internet, the spread of pornography has accelerated rapidly. Today, there are more than a billion websites on the internet. Of those, Fight The New Drug, a website devoted to exposing the harms of pornography, reported that 12 percent are pornographic. The website also reported that 40 million Americans say they are regular porn users. Research for a 2007 book, "Pornified," indicated that 70 percent of 18- to 24-year-old men visit porn sites at least once a month. Considering Christianity’s strong sexual ethic, the findings of a 2014 study that 77 percent of self-identified Christian men between the ages of 18 and 30 watched porn at least once a month indicate that the current rate for the same segment of the general population is likely to be higher.

I spent several years of my childhood dancing. Jazz, ballet, hip-hop, tap and company performance: I spent hours a week for years dancing in front of mirrors and audiences. I can’t even count how many times I was told, “Remember to smile!” When I got my first job, even on bad days my manager would remind me to smile at the customers. You know when it’s not appropriate to tell someone to smile? Basically anytime a stranger decides I’d be prettier with a smile on my face.

As many as 470,000 people have died in Syria’s civil war, and there’s no end in sight. Between the cruelty of the IS and the indiscriminate bombing of civilian areas carried out by the regime and Russia, it’s no wonder 4.8 million people have fled the country and another 6.6 million people remain displaced within its borders. The West’s response to such acute suffering has been feeble and indecisive, allowing the conflict to escalate and drive record immigration.

What if I told you that a gothic monster was born from the abandoned rally towels of Williams-Brice. That each additional towel added to the monstrous chain breathed additional life into its being. That the "Frankentowel" vanished at halftime, like a fleeting myth. That no chain of towels can outrun the truth.

Studying abroad this semester is one of the best decisions I have made during my college career. The lovely climate in the south of France, the challenging coursework, and incredible people have made the experience worthwhile. The students here at SciencesPo are bright and gifted linguistically. One of my fellow students certainly has a way with words. We were discussing the best ways to write for a campus newspaper. We argued back and forth, with him spewing multiple choice words at me, until he paid me the following compliment:
