Game: "For Honor"
Over the weekend, I finally sat down to watch “Manchester by the Sea,” an Oscar-nominated film that I’d heard nothing but great things about, and I loved it. The somber tone, beautiful camera work and excellent script all beautifully supplemented what was arguably the most impressive part of the film: Casey Affleck’s incredible acting.
You know when you are exploring a dungeon in a “Legend of Zelda” game and you discover some secret tunnel and get rewarded with a little jingle? Well, I’m not a scientist, but I can only assume that something like this happened to a group of Romanian workers that was testing ground in order to build a power plant and accidentally stumbled upon a cave that had been untouched for 5.5 million years and was filled with species never before seen on earth.
If you go on your PS4 or Xbox One right now, you are able to buy everything from the latest "Call of Duty" to an obscure indie platformer and even a game with a gameplay loop that consists solely of poking a jar of mayonnaise. The breadth of games available from expensive to cheap, complex to simple and quality to garbage is larger than it’s ever been. But is it growing too large for its own good?
For this edition of The Daily Gamecock’s quest to find the weirdest possible news to bring your way, we travel to Wisconsin, the land of cheese, snow, Aaron Rodgers and, of course, rainbow cows.
Nintendo held an event for the Switch, its new TV/handheld hybrid console, earlier this month. After the financial failure of the Wii U and a severe lack of games over the past year, gaming fans hoped to see a new Nintendo that understands its audience and comes out the gate swinging.
Were you an edgy preteen who wore all black every day to school? Maybe some black eyeliner and nail polish for good measure, and of course you had your hair dyed black and straightened while you swore to your friends that music could never get better than Asking Alexandria.
If the blunt and shamelessly generalizing headline didn’t give it away, I have a bone to pick with (many) sci-fi movies or, more to the point, their love of nonsensical or stupid endings.

Gender identity, nature vs. nurture and the journey of finding oneself. All of these themes are woven into the next show at Trustus Theatre, “Boy,” which premieres this Friday, Jan. 13.
Last year, Carolina Productions hosted a variety of events for students, including Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson speaking in the Russell House, Rae Sremmund performing at Cockstock and a comedy set from America’s Got Talent contestant Drew Lynch. This year, new president Keifer Negri hopes to continue where the organization left off by offering a new slate of interesting events.
While school might be starting again, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't find the time to continue seeing your favorite bands live. There are multiple music venues in Columbia and the surrounding areas that are offering shows in a wide range of styles and price so that there is something for everyone. Here is a sample of the bands that will be making nearby stops this semester.
Superheroes are absurdly popular. Nobody could have guessed that one day everyone’s mom would be nearly as excited as her kids to see an Avengers movie, and anyone who says that they guessed that is probably lying. However, while high-budget superhero films are constantly being churned out, it is commonly thought that between the main two comic book companies, Marvel and DC, Marvel is the clear leader in both financial success and quality.
With the new year comes new classes, new professors and a heightened awareness of just how fast time is passing and how old we are all getting (The third "Pirates of the Caribbean" and third "Spider-Man" are both turning 10 this year. The THIRD.) But the new year also means new movies, shows, games and albums to look forward to, and while the likelihood of you actually staying in the gym for more than a week after the new year is low, the odds of you sitting down to enjoy some Netflix is significantly higher. Here are a few of the releases you can look forward to in 2017.
Movie: "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"
Earlier this month, I saw Yellowcard perform at the Masquerade in Atlanta as part of their farewell tour. This is a band I’ve listened to pretty much as long as I’ve listened to music and, though many dropped off after "Ocean Avenue," I have been with them every step of the way. As I sang along with my best friend who has joined me in far too many shows to ever hope to count, saying goodbye to a band I love, I couldn’t help but be a bit emotional.
