Letter to the Editor: Rev. G. Bryant Wright does not deserve USC honor

Anti-gay, backwards beliefs of Southern Baptist Convention unacceptable, should not be lauded G. Bryant Wright, newly elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention, is set to receive a doctor of humane letters honorary degree during USC’s graduation commencement. No representative of the Southern Baptist Convention deserves such an honor from this university, unless it is predicated with the fact that the recipient has indeed distinguished himself in something — the continuing propagation of a backward agenda.

Letter to the editor: Islamic tolerance acceptable, not naivete

I value multiculturalism immensely. I believe it to be one of the most important aspects of the Western liberal tradition, the tradition that gives all of us unparalleled rights and rule of law regardless of status. Though valuable, multiculturalism is imperfect. One of the problems with multiculturalism is its tendency to instill a tolerance of even the most vile intolerance. Of course, most would argue, we can legally tolerate unpleasant groups like the Westboro Baptist Church while morally condemning their hateful actions.
