The rapid roll out of ChatGPT on campus aims to enhance learning, but vague usage guidelines create significant academic liability to students. Even when acting in good faith, vague definitions of cheating and unreliable detection methods can lead to punitive actions. In the current policy landscape, the partnership with OpenAI may act more like a trap than an opportunity.
