Often, when local music acts put out their first album it’s not a full length album or an EP. Instead, they put out a LP – a short album around five songs.

“Like Lattimore,” from local rapper J11, also known as J Ones, does everything a good LP should. It shows off great production and technical skills, which isn’t something a lot of LPs do.

It’s not just professionalism that makes “Like Lattimore” stand out. It’s a lot of fun, with thrumming house beats and the perfect chorus:

"Chicks runnin' back for these cocks like Lattimore"

If there’s any justice in the world, “Like Lattimore” should be a gameday anthem. “Sandstorm” is well and good, but there’s room for more USC gameday bangers.

The rest of the songs on the LP deal with pretty well-worn themes – ambition and the struggle of being an up-and-comer – in a fun way. The beats have some nice range, moving from jazzy to percussive. Featured rapper Fresh DeMarco fits in seamlessly with J11’s bars.

J11 is a USC alumnus currently working in the Columbia hip-hop scene. His new track “You Already Know,” featuring local rap staple FatRat Da Czar, is set to come out Tuesday, and his band, TRendSetters, is also making steps in the local scene.

“Like Lattimore” shows off fun stadium rap and more pensive songs, showing necessary diversity in only 4 songs. LPs are meant to give a taste and leave the listener wanting more, and “Like Lattimore” should do just that.
