Fresh off a strong performance in last weekend's Nike Sooner Classic, the South Carolina women's soccer team will return home for its home opener at Stone Stadium against NC State. The Gamecocks went 9-2 in Columbia last season, losing to Vanderbilt in overtime and UNCW in the NCAA Tournament.

No. 24 South Carolina beat Winthrop 3-2 Thursday night in the team's second exhibition game. With one more preseason game left, the Gamecocks have momentum headed into the regular season. If this game was any indication, the Aug. 26 matchup with No. 3 Clemsonwill be a hard-fought one.

The 24th-ranked South Carolina men's soccer team had “a good performance against a good team” Monday night, head coach Mark Berson said after the Gamecocks played No. 8 North Carolina to a 1-1 draw. South Carolina took the field with a squad made up of experienced players for the first 45 minutes before subbing in an entirely different set of 11 for the majority of the second half. Senior forward Kevin Walker scored the lone goal for the Gamecocks. Looking forward, here are three things you can expect to see from Berson's squad this year.

Bowing out first round of both the NCAA Tournament and the SEC tournament certainly wasn’t in the agenda for head coach Shelley Smith’s 2015 team. But coach Smith, going into her 15th year with the Gamecocks, knows dwelling on the season’s mishaps does no good for the 2016 season.

Last year’s season was a wild one for the Gamecocks: An ESPN Top-10 scissor kick volley goal by Jeffrey Torda, a hat trick by junior Danny Deakin — first in program since 2001 — a perfect home record and a penalty shootout win against Furman to advance in the NCAA Tournament. Yet with all excitement, the Gamecocks still fell short in both the Conference USA tournament, losing to Marshall in the semifinals, and the NCAA Tournament, falling to UC Santa Barbara in overtime the round following South Carolina’s dramatic win against Furman.

The men's soccer team’s season ended last year in heartbreaking fashion, losing 1-0 in overtime to UC Santa Barbara in the second round of the NCAA tournament. This season, it will be a struggle for the Gamecocks who upped the difficulty on their schedule by etching in eight teams that made it to last year’s NCAA Tournament, including two of the top four seeds from the 2015 tournament. However, South Carolina does return much of their production and talent from last year’s team.

On Thursday night South Carolina hosted Furman in the
opening round of the NCAA tournament at The Graveyard, their first appearance
since 2011. South Carolina entered the match with a record of 11-7-1. Furman
opposed South Carolina with a record of 8-5-5 but entered with momentum after
winning the 2015 Southern Conference Tournament.

After earning a bid in the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament, South Carolina is slated to host Furman in the first round Thursday evening. While the Gamecocks narrowly missed earning a bye in the opening round, they will have home-field advantage in this in-state matchup. South Carolina boasts a record of 11-7-1, while Furman sits at 8-5-5. The Paladins are riding a hot streak however, as they were recently crowned champions of the 2015 Southern Conference Tournament.
