Best Fraternity: Pi Kappa Alpha

As one of the largest fraternities at USC with several national awards received over the past three years, it’s no wonder Pi Kappa Alpha was voted Best Fraternity by University of South Carolina students. USC Pi Kappa Alpha Chapter’s most recent award came this past summer when they were presented with the Robert Smythe Award. The award is presented to the top 15 chapters of the 260 chapters across the nation and is based on excellence in philanthropy, community service, GPA, chapter size, recruitment and programming.

“We have a great group of guys that are committed to improving our fraternity, Greek life and the USC community,” Michael Schmidt, the 2009-2010 president of the fraternity, said.

Every fall, the fraternity hosts Pike Presents, an event where the fraternity provides Christmas presents to students in underprivileged schools. They have given presents to as many as 450 children in the past year. The past two years, Cocky and USC athletes have assisted in passing out presents to the children.

“Pi Kappa Alpha is one of my favorite fraternities here,” Kat Brown, a second-year political science student and Phi Mu sister, said. “Pairing with them for Homecoming showed their willingness to be involved and have a great time.”

This spring, the fraternity will host Pike Rodeo, a rodeo competition concert to raise money for the Columbia Fire Department as well as burn victims in the area.
