We agree with Hakeem Jefferson and Taylor Cain.
If USC’s prestigious honorary degree of humane letters is conferred upon Rev. G. Bryant Wright, it will send the wrong message to USC’s LGBT community. Like Hakeem and Taylor, we acknowledge that not everyone in the university will come to a consensus on this, or any issue for that matter. But we can’t help but acknowledge the groundswell of support that we have received this year.
Even the frattiest of gentlemen approached us during The Safe Zone Ally Project’s “Stop the H8 Week” and gave us their support. We realize that we probably will not see them at Pride this summer and we understand that they might not completely support our agenda. We do know, however, that they support us as people.
This is the core of the Carolina Creed. This is the heart of the Carolina community.
Gays and lesbians need this love and support from their university now more than ever. We challenge the University of South Carolina to be an example to schools nationwide and “discourage bigotry” by reassessing the way in which it honors Rev. Wright.
