Kratch: When South Carolina last beat Auburn ...

USC's last win over Tigers was long ago

The last time South Carolina beat Auburn in football was Dec. 2, 1933.

That was a long time ago.

So long ago, in fact, that I wondered what the world must have been like when the Gamecocks knocked off the Tigers 16-14 in Birmingham, Ala., that day.

By looking up the pertinent information, I discovered that 1933 is even longer ago than it seems.

Consider: In 1933, construction began on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. OK, yes, the bridge had to be built at some point. But did the workers have any idea they were building such an iconic structure? Could society even get such a thing built these days? If you stop and think about it in those terms, it's pretty astounding.

In 1933, Prohibition was repealed. Think about all the booze that will be consumed tomorrow not only here but all across the Southeast. And to think once upon a time, nary a drop would've been legally available to help get a tailgate going.

In 1933, the original film version of "King Kong" premiered. We've heralded this achievement by creating about 27 cruddy remakes since then.

In 1933, the Great Depression was raging. Today, the Great Recession lingers, sure, but it is nowhere near as bad as it was then.

In 1933, the United States went off the Gold Standard, helping lay the foundation for Ron Paul presidential runs.

In 1933, the first drive-in movie theater was opened. I know what you're thinking: What the heck is a drive-in movie theater? Apparently people drove cars into parking lots with big movie screens and watched from their seats. Like Netflix without any of the conveniences.

Lastly, in 1933, FM radio was patented. If not for that, angry Gamecock fans would have no place to call and rant uncontrollably once the game ends.

Now, all of this will be rendered moot by Saturday night. USC is going to win this game because it's the better team by a mile. The Gamecocks will move on in their quest to return to the SEC Championship Game and the Tigers will realize just how far away last year's national title is.

And if it takes USC another 78 years after this weekend to beat Auburn again?

Well, whoever is in my place is going to receive a quick education about Charlie Sheen, iPads and the television show "Glee."
