Carolina loses at Elon 58-53

Gamecocks drop fourth straight road game against Southern Conference opponent

The South Carolina men’s basketball team fell to Elon 58-53 Tuesday in Elon, N.C.

With the loss, USC is now 0-4 in road games against Southern Conference teams under coach Darrin Horn. The Gamecocks have been defeated by five of the SoCon’s 12 basketball members during Horn’s tenure. USC lost to Davidson in the first round of the 2009 NIT.

USC trailed by 11, 34-23, at halftime and was unable to mount a full comeback despite cutting its deficit late in the game.

Elon’s Lucas Troutman led all scorers with 14 points. Malik Cooke led the Gamecocks with nine.

USC will next play Sunday at home against Tennessee State in the opening round of the Las Vegas Invitational. Tipoff at Colonial Life Arena is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Gamecocks are now 1-1 on the season. The Phoenix is 1-1.
