As many are aware, the welfare system in the U.S. is flawed.
It is important for the lawmakers in this country to recognize that government-funded programs, such as welfare, have been and currently are being abused. There needs to be monitoring of those who receive welfare in an attempt to avoid abuse of such programs. Drug-testing possible recipients is not an awful idea, but at the same time not necessarily a good idea either.
Drug testing would be a beneficial way to prevent drug users from being able to abuse welfare. Those who pass the drug test to receive welfare will benefit more when trying to find a job that also requires drug testing. One problem would be that the legislation allows applicants for welfare to go back to their old habits once they are approved. Essentially, they can use the welfare for drugs and beat the system as they were doing before.
It is important for welfare programs to be monitored, but drug testing is not the best approach. Although drug testing can be beneficial to stopping abuses of the program, the system can also still be cheated — leaving the legislation ineffective.
