Currently there is a new type of discrimination within health care. In addition to the abortion dispute within new health care legislations, there is another issue.
Women have more health care needs than men, so there should be no reason that men are getting lower rates. Women have to face maternity expenses and they are also in need of preventative care. Due to higher rates, fewer women are able to take care of themselves as efficiently as they should. Currently, only nine states have individual plans which include maternity coverage. Women’s-rights organizations have been researching the disparities between prices for health care packages between the genders. Better health care packages often cost women the most money as well. Ending this type of discrimination would have an immense impact on our country. Many issues such as poverty, teen pregnancy and high STD rates could be lowered by not charging women more for health care than men.
As college women, it is important to take a stand against “gender rating.” The Affordable Care Act would be very beneficial to women by removing copays from certain necessary checkups. More affordable health care and no copays will motivate more women to get the correct health care services when necessary. Currently women have been submitting photos and videos to support the campaign of the National Women’s Law Center, which is fighting this discrimination.
