Shooting highlights continued racism amongst minorities

In the tragic case that has dominated the news recently, a teenager named Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by a neighborhood watchman, George Zimmerman.

This tragedy should be an eye-opener to all Americans about the truths about racism. Racism comes in different forms, but most people assume that racism is between the Caucasian race and a minority race. The truth is minorities can be racist against each other, and instances such as the Trayvon Martin case occur. Society is flawed to the point where everyone can be against everyone. It is almost to the point where many people are left to believe that nothing will ever change. These ideas are prevalent in the South because certain ways of thinking that may be unknowingly racist are passed on generation by generation.

It is important for students to be aware of these kinds of issues dealing with race because the same shooting that happened in Florida can easily happen on campus, especially with our diverse student population. Students need to be aware of these types of racial crimes and learn from them how to respect everyone and their differences in order to stop these kinds of tragedies.
