Fournette’s jersey sets record in auction

Last month, Columbia experienced flooding of historical proportions and South Carolina’s Oct. 10 football game against LSU was moved from Williams-Brice to Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Various SEC schools aided the university by providing water bottles, food and money to assist the school and the surrounding area. LSU gave South Carolina all ticket revenue and welcomed the Gamecocks with open arms.

LSU starting running back Heisman frontrunner, Leonard Fournette offered to auction his game-worn jersey to raise money for relief efforts and after the NCAA rescinded its initial opposition to the idea, Fournette stayed true to his promise.

Monday morning, Fournette’s Oct. 10 jersey sold for $101,000, or over four times the previous internet auction record of $31,070.

The funds will go directly to flood relief efforts.

Women’s soccer rewarded with home game

The 12-4-3 Gamecock women’s soccer team made an early exit from the SEC Tournament after a heartbreaking loss to Auburn in penalty kicks, but that did not stop the team from earning a home game to open the NCAA Tournament.

The team’s eighth appearance in the last nine years, the Gamecocks will host UNC-Wilmington on Friday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. at Stone Stadium.

Despite losing four of their last six games, the Gamecocks are excited to play the Seahawks this weekend.

“We are thrilled to be home,” South Carolina's head women’s soccer coach Shelley Smith said when the bracket was announced. “Credit to the [players]. We’ve had a great season and we are rewarded with a home game. To get in the NCAA’s and have a home game is tremendous.”

The winner of Friday’s match will move on to face the winner of Howard and No. 1 seeded Virginia.

Millard garners C-USA Defensive Award

Junior midfielder/defender Koty Millard was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week after a solid performance against 11th-ranked Coastal Carolina. Millard has played back lately and the Gamecocks have three shutouts since he moved to a more defensive role midway through the season.

Millard and the Gamecock defense blocked 11 of Coastal Carolina’s 20 shots before they reached sophomore goalkeeper William Pyle. South Carolina eventually won 1-0 in a game that featured a good amount of play in the Gamecock third.

Millard, who was awarded a spot on Top Drawer Soccer’s team of the week two weeks ago, will lead the Gamecocks in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament in Charlotte against the sixth-seeded New Mexico Lobos on Wednesday.

Seventh Woods set to make decision

Seventh Woods, the 6-foot-1 guard from Hammond High School in Columbia, is set to commit Wednesday morning.

A four-star recruit in the 2016 recruiting cycle, Woods is down to South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgetown with the Tar Heels and Gamecocks in the lead.

South Carolina head basketball coach Frank Martin has worked incredibly hard to keep Woods in Columbia, staying in regular communication with the high school senior over the last three seasons.

Woods is top-ranked in-state prospect and the 41st-best player in the country according to 247Sports. He is the highest ranked prospect remaining on South Carolina’s board and would join fellow four-star prospect Sedee Keita from Putnam, Connecticut.
