About halfway through "Synthetica," on the track "Dreams So Real," Metric frontwoman Emily Haines mechanically recites the lines "The scream becomes a yawn / I'll shut up and carry on" as slow motion synthesizers accompany intentionally artificial drumbeats. Haines, in her usual (and wonderful) lyrical quirkiness, is trying to articulate a sort of artistic impotence in the face of a society full of status updates, instant notifications and ever-shortening attention spans. This idea forms the thesis of the album.

It doesn't take a surgeon to see that the members of Columbia rock and soul group Dr. Roundhouse have a sense of humor. The band's name is derived from an original sketch comedy show character. "The Muppet Show's" fictional band Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem is one of several influences and each member of the four-piece group has a silly nickname. But Dr. Roundhouse does take one thing seriously: making music.

Hollywood's fascination with bringing Broadway musicals to the big screen is something I will never understand. One of the last ones to hit theaters, "Mamma Mia" (2008), proved that the whole jukebox musical thing is more enjoyable on the big stage than the big screen.

The man who sat at the bar at 5 Points Pub last Wednesday afternoon seemed different from the long-haired, shimmying frontman who rose to fame as a member of The Academy Is... in the late 2000s. Looking suave and hip with his shorter 'do, round tortoiseshell glasses and a yellow T-shirt paying homage to anime series Weekly Shonen Sunday, the musician seemed reserved and almost shy when speaking with The Daily Gamecock. But William Beckett is still pounding the pavement for the same reason: his love of the stage.

The "All In Music Tour," sponsored by All In Music Entertainment, is searching for up-and-coming talent across all genres, from rap to rock to country to gospel. The audition judges are Mel Smith and Malcom Miles, who both currently work for Cash Money Records. After the nationwide search, the judges will choose six finalists who will compete for one grand prize of $25,000 single deal, a full-length music video and the opportunity to work with Smith and Miles.
