Leading up to the Gamecocks' opening weekend against Albany, there was a healthy competition among pitchers trying to earn a spot in the weekend rotation. Throughout the fall, it was thought likely that Clarke Schmidt would start the first game of season. On Monday, coach Chad Holbrook officially announced that not only would Schmidt start the first game, but that freshman Braden Webb and junior Taylor Widener would join him in the opening series weekend rotation.

If you look at the recent trend of world series winning teams, they tend to be led by a strong rotations, not unlike this year's New York Mets. I guess the 2015 Royals didn't get the memo. Despite a regular season rotation ERA of 4.34 which ranked 22nd in baseball, the Royals find themselves up 2-0 in the series on the Mets.

The South Carolina Men’s Golf team placed ninth in the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational hosted by the Isleworth Golf & Country Club in Orlando, Florida. After posting a solid first round score of 284, the Gamecocks plummeted in the second round with a total score of 310, but rebounded to post a third round score of 293. Overall, the Gamecocks finished with a combined 54-hole total score of 887 (+23). Senior Matt NeSmith led the way on the final day of tournament action, shooting an even par 72.

The South Carolina men’s golf team placed sixth in the Shoal
Creek Invitational hosted by University of Alabama-Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama. The Gamecocks finished
with a combined 54-hole total score of 876 (12-over). Senior Sean Kelly, led the way on
the final day of tournament action, shooting two-under with a score of 70. Host
UAB cruised to victory at their home course with an impressive 54-hole total of 851 (13-under).

The Gamecock men’s golf team made the trip to Birmingham, Alabama this week to participate in the Shoal Creek Invitational hosted by UAB. The Gamecocks entered the tournament ranked seventh in the nation and as the top team in the field of 12.

The Gamecocks men's golf team kicked off their season in tournament play with a strong finish this weekend. By posting a final round score of 296 (+8), the men's golf team took home a third place finish at the Carpet Capitol Collegiate. The third place finish tied with the highest mark the golf team has posted in a season-opening tournament.
