Come and gaze over the so-called “fiscal cliff.” Gasp at the wonder that is Congress’ gross incompetency in getting a deal done. Behold the majesty that is the grossest of hypocrisy and lies spewed by Republicans, still in denial of just how soundly their methods have been rejected.

Two weeks have passed since Election Day. Two weeks have been spent analyzing the numbers, dissecting why the president won and why the Republican Party lost handily. The Republicans have had two weeks to begin thinking of what their new direction should be after a solid rejection by America. Instead, they’ve apparently decided to double-down on insanity.

Fresh off his lie-filled debate “victory” last week, Mitt Romney spent this week flexing his foreign policy muscles. Tough talk on Iran, echoed in the United Nations by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has been one of his major talking points, alongside a pledge to bloat an already bloated defense budget with trillions of dollars. The lineup of Romney’s foreign policy advisers reads like a who’s who of neo-conservative ideology. Holdovers from the George W. Bush administration fill its ranks, promising that a Romney presidency will see the same foreign defense policy that brought us the disastrous occupation in Iraq. So, military adventurism in Iran. There’s no potential way that could backfire on us. The Iraq War, built upon a lie and unfunded, cost us an estimated $2.4 trillion and the lives of nearly 4,500 American soldiers. This fails to factor in the untold thousands of innocent Iraqis killed and that the shattered Iraq became a haven for terrorists only after we invaded.Iran wants only to claim the nuclear power promised to an American-backed dictator in the 1970s, and with it the ability to enter a new age in industry. Instead, it faces hostility and aggression from Israel and the United States. The West has spent 30 years interfering with Iranian sovereignty and denying it the resources needed to enter the 21st century.Certainly Iran has not helped itself with its inflammatory, extremist rhetoric. But these are only words. It’s time to shut the war hawks up and treat Iran with common sense.

The world has gotten a bit darker during the summer. Random shootings, hate crimes, civil rights battles, a war on women's rights — and that's just in this country. Syria continues to degrade, Europe's economy teeters on the brink and Africa faces uncertainty as governments crumble.

America has a cultural identity with guns, from the colonist defending his liberty against the British to the cowboys of the Wild West to the modern grandma who stopped a home invader with her pistol. The right to own guns is so ingrained into the American persona that we enshrined it into the Bill of Rights.

We are a misunderstood people. People think we dwell in our parents' basements, eating Cheetos in front of our computers. They think we are loners, socially maladjusted recluses who never go out into the sun and only communicate through the Internet.

It's not uncommon for a party in Congress controlling only one of the houses to hold a vote in attempt to perform an action it's fully aware the other house won't approve. It's largely symbolic, but it serves as an indication that the party is trying to do what it promised to get elected. The Republican's first attempt, named "Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act," came on Feb. 1, 2011.

Included among a flurry of high-level intelligence leaks from the White House in the last week was a draft of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade agreement among several nations of the Pacific Rim. The TPP has been negotiated by the Obama administration for the last two years, its text kept secret from the public and even Congress — but not from at least 600 corporate advisors.

Failed Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has launched a new website called Patriot Voices, which is designed to "mobilize one million conservatives around this country who are committed to promoting faith, family, freedom and opportunity." Aside from the unspoken implication that anyone who disagrees with Santorum isn't a patriot, the website claims that his followers believe in several principles.

First, the ban doesn't prevent the consumption of larger beverages, only the sale. Those who really desire more soda will simply buy another, thus creating more trash in a city where landfills are already beyond capacity. Second, the ban doesn't extend to supermarkets and other retailers, so it only affects those who are eating out or need a drink on the go. Third, there's no ban on other kinds of drinks; a 16 ounce Starbucks vanilla frappuccino has 67 grams of sugar, compared to 52 grams in a similar sized Coca-Cola — which also happens to be the amount of sugar in a bottle of apple juice.

While that's all well and good, it came literally a day late and a dollar short; the President's announcement came the day after North Carolina passed its constitutional ban of gay marriage. Meanwhile, the NAACP just now seems to realize what Frederick Douglass knew when he joined the women's suffrage movement 150 years ago: If you want your own rights, you must also be willing to fight for the rights of others.
