It’s been a rough year for the presidential cabinet. After a slew of firings and resignations, the turnover rate of Trump’s White House is starting to look like that of your average McDonald’s. However, one member of this band of failed cabinet members has risen above the controversy and successfully re-entered public life without completely ruining her career. Her name is Omarosa Manigault.

We have all had a tech-averse professor who, for one reason or another, makes a point to avoid the online resources available to them. Those professors tell their classes straight away “I don’t post grades” and they leave their class Blackboard pages blank — without even a syllabus. While the use or avoidance of online resources has generally been regarded as an issue best left to professor preference, it is my contention that the university needs to hold them accountable to a more hardline standard.

If there is one overarching theme apparent in the GOP, it is reliance on Christian values. Whether or not Republican politicians follow or believe what they teach, they often talk about preserving Christian morals, ethics and family values in the American political system. After the controversy of the Parkland school shooting and heightened gun control debate, one question remains: What is the Christian belief behind gun control?

This is the first Student Government election cycle — and 2018-2019 will be the first term — to include a new speaker of the student senate position, as well as the transition towards a new role for the student body vice president. It has also seen a dramatic increase in solid, competent and qualified candidates for positions at all levels. However, there are still factors that differentiate the candidates, such as past experience, leadership and vision.

As part of the Opinion section's Sounding Board series, in which a columnist is sent out on campus to talk to USC students and find out what they have to say about current hot-button issues, we interviewed ten students about their views on school funding, tuition, and fees.

With South Korea being the third largest provider of international students to the United States and a major provider to the University of South Carolina, the lack of a Korean language major here is baffling. This language is only growing in importance, for both students with plans to pursue public and private sector careers. The University of South Carolina already offers eight languages as minor and major courses of study — surely another important language should be added to this list.

One of greatest features of the University of South Carolina is its large variety of student organizations, which range from Greek social fraternities and sororities to academic unions. A sports club is a specific type of student organization that is built around a specific sport while also receiving funding from the university.

If there is one thing that all college students hate with a fiery passion, it is the astronomical price of textbooks and access codes. Seeing that a book or access code is “required” for a class and ordering it is the saddest part of my semester, for sure. Though I understand the need for supplemental texts and homework to aid in learning, I feel the the overwhelming use of access codes in classes represents a teaching defect. If a class requires a $100-$150 access code in order to learn the concepts, I think teaching capability should come into question.

My experience using dating apps and websites as an individual on the asexual spectrum has been very difficult and isolating at times. I have never felt comfortable using Tinder, as it has a reputation for being a “hook-up” app. Being somewhere between sex-averse and sex-indifferent, I am not prepared to receive the sexually explicit messages I heard my friends say they have received on the app.

40 percent of Americans use dating apps, and 20 percent of current, lasting relationships started with an online encounter. In the college dating scene, dating apps are of ever-increasing importance, and in the world of Tinder clones some apps struggle to stand out among the rest.

In the age of Trump, the Republican party and those associated with it are completely unrecognizable. John McCain has become a liberal hero, the bumbling George W. Bush is being presented as a source of sage wisdom and, most significantly, the objectivist Paul Ryan is pushing bills that will end up drastically increasing the size of the national debt.

Elon Musk did the incredible and tossed a car up into space. Some people view it as silly, but I love the stunt. The talk going on right now about space and the future of space exploration has definitely been reinvigorated by this move, and I could not be happier. Following the trip of Falcon Heavy, the rocket that carried the car up to space, Musk came out and said, “We want a new space race. Space races are exciting."

If you’ve followed the news at all the past 18 months, you’ve probably seen coverage of the chaos at University of California Berkeley. Once a bastion of free speech, UC Berkeley has become a house divided over the issue of censorship. The school has been at the center of controversy numerous times for challenging — often times in the form of violent protests — notable political commentators like Ben Shapiro and far-right provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos. This has caused the school to become a lightning rod for right-wing criticism.

South Carolina has one of the lowest cigarette taxes in the U.S. At 57 cents a pack, cigarettes are extraordinarily cheap and there is little economic reason to quit. While this may be good for convenience store owners and the tobacco industry, it does little to encourage healthy behavior among the nearly 20 percent of South Carolinians still smoking. South Carolina would stand to gain significantly in health outcomes at little economic cost by embracing higher cigarette taxes.

If you live or lived in Women's Quad, you may have called Sims College home. If not, you may have been there on business with the Student Success Center's satellite office, or perhaps the Central Campus Housing Office. Maybe, like me, you've never been inside the building at all.

The University of South Carolina would like you to know that it won’t tolerate racist posters on the walls of its buildings. The school said as much in a statement on the matter, citing the university’s “inclusivity and respect for all.”

Just in time for the most romantic month of the year, rumors have surfaced alleging that former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley is currently having an affair with Donald Trump. The main perpetrator behind the rumor is "Fire and Fury" author Michael Wolff, whose recent interview circuit has led him to hint at a current affair with a woman specifically mentioned in the book.

The average yearly salary for a social worker in Columbia is $51,606 as of Jan. 2. This falls below the median salary for South Carolina graduates with four-year degrees. The role of a social worker is one who helps others with a variety of problems such as abuse, poverty, mental health issues and learning and physical disabilities, to name a few. Many of us can guess the amount of emotional toll that a job like this would take on a person.

Two weeks ago, the Doomsday Clock inched forward another 30 seconds. We now sit a mere two minutes from midnight. And it is exactly as melodramatic as it sounds.
