At times, our editorial board has been critical of administrators, community and student leaders and student organizations it believes have failed live up to the expectations of our readers. In a country famous for all-you-can-eat buffets and free refills, America has managed to outdo itself again. As though the profit reaped from selling millions of cups of coffee every day in sugary, seasonal flavors isn’t enough, Starbucks now has a new plan to take advantage of the bleary-eyed people rolling drowsily past the drive-through window every morning.

Mayor Benjamin, in committing to making the city a safer place to live and visit, will increase the number of police officers in Five Points and surrounding areas. We can only hope that these officers will be as serious about catching violent criminals as they are about ticketing underage drinkers. If they are, we will have one of the safest cities in the country for sure.

When Martin Luther King Jr. advocated freedom, equality and a spirit of brotherhood in America more than 50 years ago, he anticipated opposition. In fact, it took decades for his ideals to be put into effect, and many still argue that King’s dream still is not completely realized.

The recent Arizona shooting — as most things that make the news nowadays — has yet again thrown our country into a vicious cycle of debate, or more accurately, of blame and accusation. Everything from the rhetoric of political leaders to America's mental health system has been brought into the discourse as people seek a rational explanation for events that perhaps have none. But what we have failed to remember during this current crisis is that there are times for heated disagreement and the midst of national grief is not one of them.
For Gov. Nikki Haley, Wednesday was a historic and exciting day full of hope and opportunity.Or at least those are the cliche words thrown around at the beginning of every new administration.
We wholeheartedly agree with the University's decision to cancel class for two days.It was a cautious move that ensured the safety of students, faculty and staff from unnecessary danger. Now, let's evaluate how USC could have handled the situation a little better.
The Carolina Coliseum may get a makeover in the future, rendering the building relevant again and promoting the status of the University of South Carolina.
