Unless you are lucky enough to have hit the lottery or perhaps have wealthy relatives, it’s become difficult for many families to afford the rising costs of a college degree. And with a pending increase in the interest rate on some federal loans later this year, it’ll become even more difficult for students to pursue a higher education.

While Martinez has been slowly recovering, the Columbia community has convened to help him out, showing that tragic accidents can have a silver lining.

Following last year’s disaster in which the commencement committee appeared to pick random names out of the telephone book, we’re happy they reached out to students for names and were able to snag Darius Rucker and other bigwigs to appear at USC, such as Robert Gates, a former secretary of defense, and Philip Lader, a former U.S. ambassador, with whom we’re quite impressed.

It’s that time of year again, when thousands of floppy-hat-wearing and seersucker-clad southerners flock to the horse races that have become as much about drinking and socializing as the horses that run. Saturday, the annual Carolina Cup weekend begins again, but this year, students aren’t the only ones flocking down to the racetracks in eager groups. South Carolina police are as well, and they’re not interested in the race either.

With its growing popularity among undergraduate and graduate students, it’s no wonder the Department of Sport and Entertainment Management (SPTE) wants to offer a doctoral program. It’s the next logical step for the department and USC.

We understand this issue divides even the closest of neighbors. But regardless of what historic symbolism the flag holds for individual supporters, its presence on State House grounds sends a political statement — intentional or not — that many people still find offensive.
