Most weekday evenings during football season, the Gamecock campus rings with the sounds of a metronome, drums and countless other instruments. But the Mighty Sound of the Southeast doesn't only contain musicians, but performers of several sorts. One of them is Jonathan Smith, a fourth-year music education student, drummer-turned-dancer and the first male member of the Carolina Coquette dance team.

In an office filled with African art pieces and books on photography, philosophy and research methodology sits Keith Kenney, a visual communications professor in USC’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications. I first met Kenney at the airport in Rome and got to know him just a bit as a professor in the three weeks following. Although it was unusual talking to him in a small room tucked away in a corner of the journalism school, his passion for photojournalism was as clear as ever.

Beginning in December, students will initially be given six tickets for their commencement ceremonies, the university announced on Aug. 10. Students who don't use all of the tickets can return them, and leftover tickets will be redistributed to students who want to bring more than six guests.

Every year, the new class of freshmen is welcomed to USC at First Night Carolina. But this isn't actually anyone's first night at Carolina — that happens at orientation, the two-day session over the summer where new students learn the ins and outs of life as a Gamecock. Each group of freshmen is only on campus for two days, but the team of students that guides them is at USC nearly every day of the summer.

USC's most recent Student Government election cycle had its fair share of exciting moments, but any of you who are incoming freshmen or who simply decided not to keep track of the campaigns might not know much about SG or our student body officers. There was a lot of talk about what the student body officers — student body president, vice president and treasurer — were going to do this term, so I sat down with Student Body President Michael Parks and Vice President Ross Lordo to discuss what they have in the works for the fall semester.

For anyone interested in old books, good food, and, of course, Shakespeare, the perfect weekend destination is Staunton, Virginia. Just over the mountains from Charlottesville, this small town is home to the American Shakespeare Center and the only replica of the Blackfriars Playhouse, Shakespeare’s original indoor theater. Surrounding the theater are a host of cafes and coffee shops serving fresh and local food, all sorts of small book shops stocked with old and new books and an assortment of antique and art shops that you're sure to find something in.

A man is accused of throwing a hammer at his roommate during an altercation Thursday afternoon. Officers responded regarding a verbal argument that resulted in a physical attack. The victim said he had a dispute with his roommate who threatened to hurt him with a hammer. The roommate then entered the victim's bedroom and proceeded to throw a hammer, missing him but hitting and damaging the wall. The victim told officers that his roommate had a history of mental health issues, and the roommate confirmed this. The roommate turned over the hammer to officers for processing and said he is planning to move.
