The eighth annual Oktoberfest, hosted by Incarnation Lutheran Church was
a community wide event focused on sharing German culture with Columbia. This Oktoberfest included German-style entertainment, authentic food and, of course, beer.

University Chorus and Concert Choir had their semi-annual joint concert at First Thursday on Main. The historic Methodist Church on Main Street was filled to the back row Oct. 4 for the program.

Joseph Sanders, a third-year business economics student and self-taught musician, is now an official artist on the music streaming app Spotify. His first single, “Worth Waiting For,” debuted on Sept. 21 after many long hours of recording at Archer Avenue Studio in Columbia.

Former first-year roommates Sophie Kahler and Sloan Wilson discovered their common interest of film and TV after living in the same dorm room for a year. Now their second year, the history student recalled one time when she watched “Get Out” with the political science student. The pair ended up spending three hours in their room discussing the film, and Kahler realized they clearly had a lot to talk about when it comes to films.

Hurricane Florence has given USC students the unexpected free time they’ve all been wishing for since classes began. There are plenty of ways to be productive during these days off. In President Harris Pastides’ email, he recommends students get ahead (or catch up) on classwork or spend some time at the gym. But with all due respect to the president, another great way to spend rainy days is curled up in a cozy blanket with a fresh bowl of popcorn in front of the TV. Don’t feel guilty, you deserve it.

Food Network regular and first female Iron Chef Cat Cora brought her unique Mediterranean style cuisine to OLILO, a restaurant located in Russell House’s newly renovated dining area. Cora spent Tuesday morning in Russell House, unveiling the new restaurant and meeting students at a book signing.

Chad Penner's MFA thesis exhibition, "Superpower," depicts superheroes differently than what we see in a typical comic book. This week, the McMaster Gallery is showcasing ten larger-than-life charcoal drawings created by Penner, a master of fine arts student at USC.

Working as the artistic director for Columbia's premiere ballet company comes with a unique set of challenges. This season William Starrett, Executive and Artistic Director of the Columbia City Ballet, is tasked with making an old play new. On Saturday, Jan. 27, the Columbia City Ballet will perform its fifth rendition under Starrett's direction of one of Shakespeare's classics: "A Midsummer Night’s Dream."

Cultures from all over the globe were represented at the Cultural Street Fair. Students were able to taste many types of food including pizza from Italy, rice cakes from China, baklava from Greece and snacks from Vietnam. Music representing different cultures played in the background as attendees explored the many student organizations.

The 10th annual USC Fashion Week continued with a Student Designer Showcase on Wednesday evening. The venue at 701 Whaley Street was decorated with string lights, a photo opt background and included many tables that displayed handmade products made by students.

One of the many things the University of South Carolina is proud of is its rich history. Every student has a favorite USC tradition, can recite the alma mater, or can at least point in the direction of the historic Horseshoe. Over 200 years of traditions make USC a historic landmark of the South. 1801 Grille, named after the year South Carolina College opened, encompasses much of USC’s history in one classy restaurant. The grille opened its doors at the beginning of the month.
