South Carolina and CBS News played host to the most recent Republican presidential candidate debate. The debate focused solely on foreign policy issues America is facing today, such as Iran’s nuclear facilities, foreign aid to other nations — especially Israel — and the practice of torture.

I feel for Jon Huntsman, I really do. To be such a rational, straight-talking, moderate conservative with an impressive record as governor of Utah and only capture 1 percent in most Republican presidential primary national polls is probably quite frustrating for the man.

The race for the Republican presidential candidacy is in full swing, with Herman Cain and Mitt Romney tied at the top. No one really knows who is going to win the first primaries and caucuses, but the race is truly up for grabs.

First consider the fact that this War on Terror has cost us more than $1.2 trillion and that our Department of Defense budget every year is close to $1 trillion. This American money would serve the public better if put toward cutting the debt and improving American lives rather than overseas trying to build democracy.

I’m sick and tired of people trying to tell the student section as a whole to treat opponents with respect. If you’re one of those wild, die-hard fans, you do not have to keep reading. I am talking to those who think football is a time for people to hold hands and root for both teams.

What comes out of the Texas governor's mouth can only be described as a plethora of lies, doublespeak and absolute idiocy.

This weekend I, like so many others I know, watched several documentaries on the horrific events that this country endured together on Sept. 11, 2001. I was struck by many things, from the response of New Yorkers on the street standing in awe of their great city under attack to the response of the brave men and women of the New York Fire Department and the New York Police Department. One thing stood out, however.

This is a lesson that Michele Bachmann has probably learned the hard way in the past week.

Ron Paul is that voice. He has been guided by his steadfast principles, such as personal liberty, lower taxes and a constitutional government. He has also shown great commitment to this country by serving in the United States Air Force and in the United States House of Representatives for 23 years while never once voting to raise taxes, for an unbalanced budget or for an unconstitutional use of federal revenue, all while never voting to raise his own salary and returning part of that back to the U.S. Treasury.

The winter cold has arrived, and no one wants to walk to class anymore.

The SEC Championship has finally arrived. We are a mere four days away from doing something that no South Carolina Gamecock football team has ever done: play for the SEC title. We have endured all the heartbreak and trials. We have seen victorious upsets and commanding wins over strong teams. In short, we have been through the highs and lows that are Carolina football.

As I applauded and cheered for the men and women in the armed forces during the halftime presentation at the Saturday game, I started thinking of the countless lives lost because of war and wondered if it would really all be worth it in the end. I am not downplaying their service; I look up to all veterans and active members of the armed forces. I am, however, wondering about the motives and ideas of the politicians in Washington. There have been almost 6,000 U.S. military deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq combined, and when I saw all those who had a loved one who lost their life in the war stand up, I was moved enormously. To me, one life lost in war is too many.
