IndieSouth Spring Market Preview: a weekend of handmade goods, local artists

For the third year, IndieSouth will host a Spring Market at 701 Whaley this Saturday and Sunday. Indie South Fair is a “travelling curated market” that showcases local and regional artists, designers and entrepreneurs.

The IndieSouth Fair began in 2006, when founder Serra Ferguson saw a need for Southern artists to display and sell their work to an eager market. The flagship store, located in Athens, Georgia, opened in 2016 after Ferguson decided to showcase handmade goods year-round as well as hosting workshops.

“People can expect to find a selection of vendors from around the Southeast selling everything from art, jewelry, ceramics, vintage and gifts,” Ferguson said. Along with Artisan vendors, King of Pops and a vinyl DJ will be on hand to provide sweet treats and music.

The fair, which runs from 11 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, will feature handmade jewelry, art and home décor, and clothing in addition to food trucks and live music. Take a look at a few of the vendors that will set up shop at 701 Whaley this weekend:

In Blue Handmade

A leather-crafting business out of Asheville, In Blue is a small company that makes handmade leather bags, belts, journals, and flasks.

In Blue started in Chicago before moving to a farm in Southern Illinois before settling in Asheville, where they’ve been making leather goods by hand ever since. Along with music and arts festivals, In Blue sells at major music festivals like Bonnaroo and Merle Fest. Check out their goods here before the Fair.

Modern Forestry

A soy-based candle company out of Greenville, Modern Forestry sells candles all up the East Coast and Midwest. The owners, John and Sarah Collins, create and sell every scent from “coffeehouse” to “Appalachian Bourbon Maple” and “Patchouli."

You can also purchase customized Mason jar candles, adorned for a special celebration or gift. Their spring/summer collection features scents such as honeydew, blackberry sage, and Ylang Ylang tea.

Modern Forestry will be at IndieSouth Fair to sell their soy-based Mason Jar candles all weekend.

Moon.Flower.Child

From designer Juliana Yasmine, Moon.Flower.Child is a Durham, N.C.-based boutique that sells bohemian clothing, jewelry, essential oils and spiritual guides to festivals and markets across the country.

Yasmine’s latest venture, a bus named “Meraki”, is a travelling boutique that will arrive at the IndieSouth Spring Market this weekend. The mobile boutique sells an array of handmade local goods — clothing, jewelry, candles, tinctures and even honey.
