As my learned friend Hakeem Jefferson stated in his newest viewpoints editorial, it appears that congresswoman Bachmann has gotten her facts mixed up quite often. I have no doubt that he has done his research and is 100 percent correct on the matter. However, I want to remind my fellow Americans of a slightly more important issue facing us today rather than the foolish comments from an unknown representative from a state lost in the Midwest. I would like to remind my fellow citizens of the promises President Obama has failed to keep. In my opinion, the promises and words of our president are much more important than the words of some political hopeful. However, most politicians these days are guilty of making promises they cannot keep in order to get into office. President Obama stays true in this category and has done more than his share of promising things he cannot keep. For example, Jon Stewart, an American politics television host and comedian, aired a bit about the numerous times candidate Barack Obama stated that the health care legislation, going through Congress at the time, would be televised on C-SPAN. However, after candidate Obama became President Obama, health care legislation became “Stealth Care Legislation” as Stewart phrased it. This is just one example, there are countless more. Fortunately for me and other Republicans in our red state of South Carolina, many of his promises have been broken, meaning more liberal legislation has not been passed through Congress. I am confident, without a doubt in my mind, that there will be more cases of this dishonesty with not only Democrats, but Republicans as well. Also, I am confident that the flow of ignorance and malice will not cease either. There are ways to deal with it, however. Elie Wiesel once commented on how this is an age of technology and communication. He said, “Let us say a tragedy takes place. For a day we are all glued to the station. Three days later we are still glued. A week later another tragedy occurs, and then the first tragedy is overshadowed by the next one.” We must draw inspiration from this quote and not absolve our president from obligations he has made. If not, American politics may never change from being cut-throat, mud-slinging and partisan.
