In our opinion: Nikki Haley should visit USC campus, speak with students

She then promised $5 million for aerospace engineering and took questions from students. It was a moment of great clarity for many of our students who had watched the events of the past two weeks unfold.

Gov. Haley, we'd like for you to take a page out of Darla Moore's playbook and spend a few hours on campus.

This isn't a snarky request or one made out of frustration with your decision to remove Darla Moore from the board.

We just think you'd benefit from spending an hour meeting with President Pastides and our top administrators. Talk with our pioneering research scientists and hear how they're shaping the future of this state. Sit in on an international business class and discover the cutting-edge ideas that are coming out of our Darla Moore School of Business.

Walk around campus and mingle with students.

And schedule a ballroom town hall inside the Russell House just like Darla Moore did last week. We can almost guarantee you a packed house of curious and intelligent students. We want to engage in discourse that moves our state forward.

For almost two weeks now, your decision to remove Darla Moore from USC's board of trustees has caused controversy across campus.

Your priorities for higher education are unclear. We're worried about some of your proposals, including a tuition and out-of-state student cap. And our paper — just like almost every other newspaper in the state — has only heard from your press secretary through written statements.

We want to hear your plans and hope you take this request seriously.

We'll be happy to help you plan this visit.

We look forward to hearing from you.
