Letter to the editor: Attacks on SBC leader unwarranted

Organization not advocate of hate

I am writing in response to Cassie Stanton's article entitled "Honorary degree recipient criticized." There are a few things I would like to point out about this article and the story of Reverend Wright.

I want to express my concern for the students who are quoted in the story who basically attack Rev. Wright's character. They associate him with being an advocate of hate, and of not representing USC positively. While I have never met Rev. Wright, I can assure that you he is not an advocate of hate. The religion which he represents is one which teaches that we are to love people. Yes there are viewpoints that disagree with the Southern Baptist Convention, and it is his job to make sure that the integrity of the SBC is maintained, but that by no means makes him an "advocate of hate."

The Carolinian Creed does pledge to discourage bigotry, but it also pledges several other things which Rev. Wright fully upholds and exemplifies. The SBC does an enormous work with the poor and needy, demonstrating a deep concern for others, and that is only one area. As for giving the honor to an individual who represents the entire university, this is impossible. Because USC is a very accepting and tolerant campus, it is impossible to please every member and every group on campus.

The award is for those who represent the university in a positive way. Rev. Wright has been an outstanding leader for the SBC for a long period of time and a devoted pastor before that. I challenge you to find a more qualified person to receive this honor.
