For a group of people that constantly demands tolerance of its lifestyle, the LGBT community has left a resounding stain on its message of equality and tolerance with its outcries against Rev. Wright’s expected reception of an honorary degree at graduation.
Before you write me off as a gay-hating, homophobic, Southern homer who wants to pass legislation to forever ban gay marriage and repress the LGBT community, consider the actions you promote in suggesting that Rev. Wright is not deserving of having this honor bestowed upon him by this university — the same intolerance and lack of equality you claim is present in society.
There are parts of the Bible that condemn the lifestyle of the LGBT community, so, like it or not, Southern Baptists are more than free to condemn your lifestyle of choice in the same way you promote it. The LGBT community and its supporters need to step back on this issue, respect the beliefs of the religious community, and not protest Rev. Wright’s honor if they value true equality.
Once again, the LGBT community reveals the hypocrisy of many minority groups seeking “equality.” Its definition of equality merely is to seek special protection or privileges for its members through the law. It suggests Rev. Wright is undeserving because the SBC has opposed special government funding to the LGBT community and special hate crimes legislation to protect special classes of homosexual and transgender persons.
Why can’t we all share the same protections under law, regardless of a person’s color, gender, age or sexual preference? By creating special classes of people and separating society through law, how can we ever expect to achieve equality and eliminate discrimination? While practicing reverse intolerance against those who don’t agree with us, we certainly never can.
Accept the fact that we have differences and celebrate them rather than making everything a public forum for trying to discredit each other.
