Five Points curfew enforces boundaries for youth

Parents should have a stronger role in setting boundaries for children

The law probably won't eliminate Five Points violence, but it will reduce the possibility that children could be the victims or cause of crime. There is no justifiable reason youth should be roaming a party area designed to attract adults to drink.

It's also sad that the curfew had to be enacted by the city instead of by parents.

In an article by The State about the curfew's permanence, the mother of the young man who was beaten said parents need to do their jobs and establish boundaries for children. Parents clearly aren't fulfilling their roles if they don't know what their children are up to or where they are after 11 p.m. If they do know that their children are in Five Points — and don't care — then their apathetic attitude is disturbing. The curfew says a lot more about the older generation than the younger one.

Unfortunately it was the lack of parental supervision that caused the city to step in and put supervision in the hands of law enforcement. This curfew will continue to set guidelines for both parents and children, but hopefully parents will learn from it and more extreme measures won't need to be taken.
