Carolina Alert test successful

USC Division of Law Enforcement and Safety conducted a Carolina Alert test on Sept. 18. This alert tested more than 10 different systems.

The text messages were 98.9 percent successful and email alerts were 99.5 percent successful. All messages were posted, but the alerts that were considered “not successful” were not posted as quickly as expected by the portal. The USC Police Department is currently working on resolving this technology issue.

USC uses two different ways to decide how to send an alert. For public notification only situations that are not urgent, such as severe thunderstorms, USC uses the Carolina Alert website and social media accounts.

For potentially life-threatening situations that require action, USC will send email or text alerts. They can also use indoor or outdoor sirens and other notification systems.
