At the April 15 meeting of the student senate, Chairman of the Finance Committee Thomas Spurgeon resigned as a student senator and was confirmed as the next student body treasurer. Spurgeon was nominated last week by Student Body President Cole Rotondo to replace former treasurer Ashley Reynolds.

Sen. Jackson Matthews also resigned from the position of student senator.

Rotondo announced his veto of a previously passed piece of legislation that would limit the involvement of freshman council members in Student Government election campaigns.

β€œIt is unfair to the freshman council, and it hinders their ability to get involved in campaigns in a meaningful way,” Rotondo said. β€œI just don't want to ever have to have a situation where we are infringing upon someone's ability to get involved in something that is technically outside of Student Government.”

Sen. Lester Lewis motioned to have the senate reconsider the veto. The senate vote to override the veto did not pass.

The senate passed two bills that amend different sections of the Student Government codes. It carried four pieces over to be voted on at its next meeting, including a recommendation to allow students limited access to pepper spray for self-defense. The other pieces carried over are bills regarding amendments to the Student Government codes and constitution and creating rules for senate chairpeople.

The senate will meet again April 22 in the Russell House Theater.
