Basketball Times national coach of the year, Olympic gold medal recipient and now, honorary deputy for the Richland County Sheriff's Department.

South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley was recognized by Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott Tuesday, when she was sworn in as an honorary sheriff's deputy after practice at the Carolina Coliseum.

“Staley has always been interested in law enforcement, and this has become a way for her to live out that dream and be a part of the sheriff department’s family,” Lott told WACH Fox News.

Staley’s impact reaches far beyond the basketball court; she founded The Dawn Staley Foundation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, an organization that concentrates on providing academic and athletic advantages to inner city girls.

In 2013, she co-founded INNERSOLE, which provides shoes to children who are homeless or in need. As of Feb. 3, the organization has donated over 5,700 sneakers to children.
