Freshmen shine as Gamecocks defeat Lander

After dropping two contests over a three-game stretch, South Carolina men's basketball rebounded with a 90-62 victory over Lander. The Gamecocks entered the half with a 53-16 advantage as they dominated both ends of the court, however, the Division II Bearcats capitalized on their opponent's lackluster play in the second half to outscore South Carolina.

The Gamecocks were able to sink a bevy of mid-range jumpers and got to the line early and often to open up with a commanding 39-7 lead. As the first half progressed the Gamecocks were able to increase their production from the perimeter.

On defense South Carolina completely immobilized the Bearcats early on, denying their opponents easy baskets while also controlling the tempo and forcing Lander to rush on offense.

Freshman guard Rakym Felder went five for six from behind the arc and scored a career-high 20 points in 20 minutes of play. Felder demonstrated his range as shooter in the first half, making multiple three-point attempts from well beyond the line.

Felder wasn't the only freshman to have a career-night. Forward Maik Kotsar recorded his first double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Gamecocks seemingly settled into cruise control for the second half, and Lander responded with a 10-0 run midway through the period.

Junior guard J.R. Washington paced the Bearcats with 16 points.

Before embarking on conference play, the Gamecocks will play Memphis at 9:00 p.m. on Dec. 30.
