ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: CBS 60 Minutes correspondent Bob Simon dies in car accident

Bob Simon, a "60 Minutes" correspondent and CBS News foreign reporter, died Wednesday night in a car accident, CBS News reported.

The accident happened in New York City, and Simon died at age 73.

Simon worked at CBS since 1967 and became CBS News’ chief Middle East correspondent in 1987. 

His career took him all over the world, often into places involved in conflicts and wars. He reported on the Vietnam War, violence in Northern Ireland, war zones of various countries and American military actions. He also covered the Olympics multiple times though out his career.

Simon worked for "60 Minutes," most notably getting interviews with extremist Iraqi cleric Muqtada al Sadr and the Ayatollah al-Hakim, a Shiite Muslim. His most recent "60 Minutes" interview ran last week, when he interviewed the director of the Academy Award-nominated film “Selma.”

He won several awards though out his life, including Emmy Awards, OPC Awards, Peabody Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Emmy.
