Last Saturday marked one of the greatest days of the year: rivalry Saturday. Teams across the country took to the field to battle their biggest rivals in football, some upsetting their competition and others rightfully claiming their dominance. College football in and of itself is a game driven by passion, but rival Saturday brings additional incentive to win: pride.

The University of South Carolina does everything it can to reach its students, including social networking. Keeping up with social media is a necessity when it comes to spreading news and connecting the campus, so USC organizations have taken to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to meet their demographic. However, it seems that official university-run accounts aren’t the only USC news accounts students are following.

Down the road from the Williams-Brice Stadium is a Sonoco Recycling Plant. Sonoco recycling plants annually recycle 3.5 million tons of paper, plastic, metals and other materials. The Sonoco Columbia branch makes it a priority to enlist the help of USC students to keep our campus clean and recycle. The problem is, even with intentions in the right place, most of what we recycle ends up in the trash.

Black Friday seems to be as big of a deal, if not bigger, than Thanksgiving. Just as the food coma sets in, deals and packed shopping malls beckon the sloth-like shoppers. The deals are undeniable, the lines are unbearable, but the thrill is what wakes stuffed post-Thanksgiving feasters at the crack of dawn.

Saturday’s football game took an extended halftime break to honor the military — those currently fighting, veterans and those who have passed. The show’s elaborate production sparked a patriotic response from the Williams-Brice Stadium crowd. Even with a heated presidential election and a country divided in its aftereffects, fans of the home and visiting teams stood unified. The quiet, respectful crowd painted an excellent picture of how our country needs to be: proud, reverent and unified.

Victory is a feeling that everyone strives for. Our Carolina Gamecocks know this feeling well. However, with victory comes two distinct paths: sportsmanship and obnoxiousness. By the fourth quarter in Saturday’s bloodbath, the Gamecocks had more than proven themselves, so when the student section began to chant “over-rated,” our victory took a sharp left turn into obnoxiousness. The football players on the field gave the crowd the signal for quieting down but the damage was done.I love my Gamecocks as much as the next student and agree that any team that dares to enter the Cockpit deserves to feel the wrath of USC. However, our actions on the field should be enough to claim a title and leave it at that.Let visitors and alumni be sure that our fans are as devoted as they come, but respectful as well. Being respectful doesn’t require less cheering in favor of the Gamecocks, but please, leave the trash talking at home.On the Horseshoe, while being filmed by ESPN College GameDay, a vulgar chant broke out among students: “F--- Georgia.” Over and over. Families from around the state had brought their impressionable children to cheer on our team, and ESPN was there. A nationwide broadcast was taking place and our reputation became defined by two simple words.Passion is great. If you’re not losing your voice cheering for your Gamecocks, something is wrong. But let our passion be positive. We can bring home a victory and the visitors will know who the better team is without our fans saying a single foul word.

The weekly, 30-minute episodes of “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” follow the lives of a McIntyre, Ga. family. As a spin-off from Toddlers in Tiaras, this TLC reality show makes me flip the channel faster than you can say “beautimous.”
