Local woman identified as victim of Lexington County fire
Student body presidential candidate Michael Parks reportedly coerced votes from Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity members, according to evidence sent to The Daily Gamecock. Parks also has been reported for several campaign violations that occurred in the final day of Student Government elections.
Leading up to the Gamecocks' opening weekend against Albany, there was a healthy competition among pitchers trying to earn a spot in the weekend rotation. Throughout the fall, it was thought likely that Clarke Schmidt would start the first game of season. On Monday, coach Chad Holbrook officially announced that not only would Schmidt start the first game, but that freshman Braden Webb and junior Taylor Widener would join him in the opening series weekend rotation.
In 2013, the Louisville Cardinals’ athletic department had reached the pinnacle of success. The football team won the Sugar Bowl against the No. 3 Florida Gators, the baseball team beat the No. 2 Vanderbilt Commodores to reach the College World series, the women’s basketball team made it all the way to the national championship and Rick Pitino led the men’s team to a national championship over Michigan.
Several student body candidates — Cory Alpert, president; Dennzon Winley, president; Stinson Rogers, treasurer — have been assessed penalties following accusations of campaign code violations.
The Daily Gamecock will not be endorsing candidates in the 2016 Republican, Democratic and Libertarian primaries. The likelihood of coming to a meaningful staff consensus on these issues is small, and that is definitely not a bad thing. Diversity in political views makes this campus and nation stronger rather than weaker.
Across the country and across the USC campus, election season is about to kick into high gear. On Tuesday, student government candidates for the 2016-2017 academic year will have their mandatory candidate meeting, after which they will be allowed to campaign in earnest.

According to Bloomberg, an estimated $10 billion will be spent on the 2016 presidential race. From television ads to travel to staff, those campaigns become massive expenditures that cross the country in ways unimaginable by this country’s first politicians. Of course, no one is arguing that there is something inherently wrong with expensive operations — sometimes they can produce fantastic results as the legitimate voice of the people. However, this can often go horribly astray when money going into politics is not visible.
Four USC Upstate student-athletes killed, one injured in car crash

Fraternity Council President Tim Bryson and Vice President of Conduct Jonathan Withrow will be recommended for dismissal Monday, according to an email received by The Daily Gamecock.
This past Friday, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders brought his campaign rolling through South Carolina at top-speed.
