University of South Carolina’s annual entrepreneurial competition put on by the Faber Entrepreneurship Center, The Proving Ground, is expanding opportunities and horizons for undergraduates, graduate students and alumni from a cross-section of disciplines looking to compete to make their ideas come to fruition. The competition will not be until Nov. 17, but the deadline for submission is Friday, Oct. 23.

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden offered complimentary admission to Richland and Lexington county residents in light of the historic flooding in the area when they reopened on Wednesday, Oct. 7, after being closed for two days. On Sunday, Oct. 12, zoo officials announced that a total of 29,345 guests took advantage of the opportunity to visit the zoo from Oct. 7 to Oct. 9.

As the flood waters continued to recede after October's historic flood, citizen, student and alumni volunteers came out in mass to do all that they can to help the community in a time of disaster. Although classes were canceled for that week, many students were out at several different locations helping to distribute water, food, clothes and other supplies to those affected by the devastating flooding.

Many students fail to recognize that the university is part of an even larger community in the city of Columbia and surrounding areas. Members of Freshman Council hope they can assist students and student organizations to be proactive in the local community and promote positive change for fellow students and residents.
