Undefeated South Carolina headed for their first road game Friday night against their upstate rivals, Clemson. The Gamecocks are coming off a pair of wins where they handled Mercer 2-1 and had an incredible second half to squeeze past Georgia Southern 4-2. Clemson, ranked ninth in the nation, have also enjoyed a winning season behind solid team play. Out of the seven goals of the season, Clemson has six different scorers (midfielder Paul Clowes has two goals). South Carolina won last year’s matchup 2-1 in double overtime.

With the weekend off, the Gamecocks were back in action Monday against Georgia Southern, and won the game 4-2. South Carolina won their opener Friday, beating Mercer 2-1 thanks to goals from freshman Ben Davidson and senior Jeffrey Torda. Georgia Southern dropped their first game to Stetson on Friday, 3-1, even though they were tied in the 84th minute. This is their first meeting since 1997 when they tied 3-3.

The Gamecocks began their 2015 campaign against Mercer in a rematch of last season’s matchup, a game South Carolina won 2-0. Mercer returned nine starters from last year’s Southern Conference regular season title team, including 85 percent of its goal production. South Carolina bring back 16 total members of the 2014 Conference USA runner-up team, but lost 53 percent of their goal production. However, junior midfielder Kurtis Turner stepped up in the preseason, scoring three goals in the three games he played.

After an interesting preseason, the men’s soccer team opens up the 2015 regular season against Mercer, a team that went 14-7 in the 2014 season. Mercer comes into the game ranked 86th in the nation while South Carolina owns the 54th spot. On Friday, the two teams will revisit last years matchup — a matchup that ended in a 2-0 win for the Gamecocks.

In the first three exhibition games of the year, the men’s
soccer team has had its ups and downs. With a 3-0 win in which the Gamecocks
outshot Gardner-Webb 20-0 in the first game then a 1-1 draw against Winthrop,
the Gamecocks came back Sunday night for their final exercise before the real
test.
